Chapter Twelve

THE WAITRESS

Oliver’s residence is a paradise—if you’re into grand, never-ending hallways with creepy works of art displaying bleeding human parts, high ceilings with an assorted collection of chandeliers on every corner, and air conditioners set on their lowest setting that turns the mansion into an extravagant freezer for the rich.

A short mustache-sporting chief of staff meets me by the door and frowns, examining me. “We don’t have much time.” He leads me to the dressing room to “change out of that awful outfit” before I can be presented to the chef. He gives me a uniform consisting of a black knee-length pencil skirt, a white blouse, a black tie, and a garter belt, explaining that all of their female staff is required to wear similar outfits. My flats are given a boot, replaced with a four-inch heeled disaster.

A few minutes later, Francesca comes out of the dressing room. Make no mistake: Francesca doesn’t hold any more resemblance to Emilia than the bad-ass international spy who was riding in the bed of Taylor’s truck.

Oh, but I’ve carried on with the spy personality by attaching the inauspicious objects from my messenger bag to the garter belt under my skirt. That’s bad-ass all the way for you.

Prim-looking hooker Francesca is ready for her mission.
